New work appears to be Banksy

Ever the social commentator, it looks like Banksy has created another piece of compelling street art in Gloucestershire, England.

Sunday morning in the town of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, appeared a work created around a British Telecom phone box, of a group of spies with surveillance equipment appearing to ‘’tap’’ the phone box itself.

This new piece which has all the hallmarks of Bansky’s style,  is interestingly timed, after recent conjecture over alleged  surveillance by Cheltenham based GCHQ ( Government Communications Head Quarters) and the NSA (National Security Agency) revealed by the whistle blower Edward Snowden.

Essentially, Snowden claims a number of mass surveillance programs were undertaken by these agencies, that enabled them to ,amongst other things, intercept data on mass from fibre optic cables of global phone and internet networks.

As well as timely social comment, Banksy’s artistic stroke of genius in this piece  is linking the work up to the actual satellite dish on the outside of the neighbours’ wall. His technique of old school spies around the old school phone box is brilliant and hopefully intentional.

Banksy continues to create a bright spark of sharp social satire in an increasingly beige and weary media world.
